Your Guide of Greece
This web guide is the result of years of exploring the Greek countryside -out of my base in Athens, for treasures of nature and antiquity. It has been an informed quest -I am an archaeologist by training- and one that I recorded, commented and charted –complete with GPS coordinates. By no means is this quest concluded but I thought it’s time I shared my discoveries so far, these gems of places.
Many of these places are not exclusively of archaeological interest or natural beauty but a combination of both. It is a fact that the ancient Greeks carefully selected the location of their settlements, temples, stadiums or even cemeteries; wonders in startling settings where I would often find myself to be the sole visitor. Greece is a unique country in the sense that one literally lives among monuments; you can swim in the sea and marvel at the sight of an ancient temple just uphill –at Kommos beach in Crete, Lyssos beach also in Crete, Carthaia on the island of Kea, or even Asteras beach in Athens.
I have tried to gather as much information as I possibly could with regard to different aspects of each location such as its history and architecture; and practical tips that should prove useful in the way of planning your own itinerary!
Apart from the archaeological sites that abound everywhere in Greece I have selected quite a few alpine destinations to introduce you into the picturesque Greek landscapes. The mountainous main body of the country is largely unknown as tourists head mainly for the island beaches.
Actually, the country offers alpine landscapes of great diversity, from the fir forests of Evrytania to the leaves-shedding forests of mount Taygetos or Pelion.
The fact that one can practice many a sports activity within the mountainous natural surroundings from hiking to skiing is really fascinating!
In the way of summer holidays I have selected a number of secluded beaches on barely known small islands where you can enjoy the sea and the sun forhours on end in absolute serenity away from the crowds that overwhelm all the cosmopolitan Greek beaches. In case you still want to visit one of thecosmopolitan islands I have discovered beaches that remain unknown to the masses mostly because they are difficult to reach.
In order to provide you with a general overview I have rated the places I visited in terms of accessibility, archaeological interest, landscape attractiveness, andcrowdedness and I uploaded relative photos and videos.
I would be delighted to receive your suggestions on new destinations, or your comments regarding the places you have visited in Greece at
